Alignment between Flattened Protostellar Infall Envelopes and Ambient Magnetic Fields

چکیده
We present 350 μm polarization observations of four low-mass cores containing Class 0 protostars: L483, L1157, L1448-IRS2, and Serp-FIR1. This is the second paper in a larger survey aimed at testing magnetically regulated models for core-collapse. One key prediction of these models is that the mean magnetic field in a core should be aligned with the symmetry axis (minor axis) of the flattened YSO inner envelope (aka pseudodisk). Furthermore, the field should exhibit a pinched or hour-glass shaped morphology as gravity drags the field inward towards the central protostar. We combine our results for the four cores with results for three similar cores that were published in the first paper from our survey. An analysis of the 350 μm polarization data for the seven cores yields evidence of a positive correlation between mean field direction and pseudodisk symmetry axis. Our rough estimate for the probability of obtaining by pure chance a correlation as strong as the one we found is about 5%. In addition, we combine together data for multiple cores to create a source-averaged magnetic field map having improved signal-to-noise ratio, and this map shows good agreement between mean field direction and pseudodisk axis (they are within 15). We also see hints of a magnetic pinch in the source-averaged map. We conclude that core-scale magnetic fields appear to be strong enough to guide gas infall, as predicted by the magnetically regulated models. Finally, we find evidence of a positive correlation between core magnetic field direction and bipolar outflow axis.

Modelling submillimetre spectra of the protostellar infall candidates NGC1333–IRAS2 and Serpens SMM4
We present a radiative transfer model, which is applicable to the study of submillimetre spectral line observations of protostellar envelopes. The model uses an exact, non-LTE, spherically symmetric radiative transfer ‘Stenholm’ method, which numerically solves the radiative transfer problem by the process of ‘Λ-iteration’. We also present submillimetre spectral line data of the Class 0 protost...
متن کاملInfall and Outflow around the Hh 212 Protostellar System
HH 212 is a highly collimated jet discovered in H2 powered by a young Class 0 source, IRAS 054130104, in the L1630 cloud of Orion. We have mapped around it in 1.33 mm continuum, CO (J = 2−1), CO (J = 2 − 1), CO (J = 2 − 1), and SO (JK = 65 − 54) emission at ∼ 2.5 ′′ resolution with the Submillimeter Array. A dust core is seen in the continuum around the source. A flattened envelope is seen in C...
متن کاملThe Physics of Star Formation : Understanding
We propose to bring the power of NGST to bear on one of the most important problems in star formation { understanding protostellar formation from parent molecular cores and subsequent evolution towards becoming young stars. A few extremely young (10 < < 10 yr) protostars have nally been discovered with sub-millimeter telescopes in recent years, but the high extinctions (Av > 400 mag) towards th...
متن کاملFlattened Protostellar Envelope in Absorption around L 1157
Deep Spitzer IRAC images of L1157 reveal many of the details of the outflow and the circumstellar environment of this Class 0 protostar. In IRAC band 4, 8 μm, there is a flattened structure seen in absorption against the background emission. The structure is perpendicular to the outflow and is extended to a diameter of ∼2′. This structure is the first clear detection of a flattened circumstella...
متن کاملStructure and dynamics of the class I young stellar object L 1489 IRS
Context. During protostellar collapse, conservation of angular momentum leads to the formation of an accretion disc. Little is known observationally about how and when the velocity field around the protostar shifts from infall-dominated to rotation-dominated. Aims. We investigate this transition in the low-mass protostar L1489 IRS, which is known to be embedded in a flattened, disc-like structu...
